Amongst the priorities for families planning to move house is access to a good school.
For parents, this means high educational standards as well as a nurturing environment, with sport and fitness encouraged. School websites will usually provide adequate information, and chatting to potential neighbours can be a valuable to get the ‘feel’ of a school, and its reputation.
However, the best source for independent assessment is Ofsted, the Government’s inspectorate of schools, colleges, nurseries etc. Parents can access the latest data on their website by simply putting in the name of a school or other provider: reports.ofsted.gov.uk.
Ofsted reports are fair and balanced, evaluating all aspects of a school and its ethos: how it is governed, engagement with parents and outside bodies (e.g. sports clubs) and management of Special Needs pupils.
Good schools welcome parents as Governors, bringing their own professional expertise and experiences to challenge and support staff and the community.
